Internship | Sensor Technology Readiness Calculator
About this position
For TNO’s Weapon Systems Department, we are currently seeking a highly motivated intern to join our team and assist in the development of a GUI for our STR calculator (STR stands for Sensor Technology Readiness). Within our department, the performance of weapon systems is analysed primarily to advise the Netherlands ministry of defense. The variety of weapons range from small calibre systems up to large and complex guided weapons. To determine the contribution of weapon systems to combat success, a lot of system aspects must be covered. Good advice requires all these aspects to be taken into account.
What will be your role?
The STR calculator is intended to provide a quick triage as to whether a specific (sensor) technology is suitable for a specific military application. This triage consists of an assessment of the Technology Readiness Level, as well as a comparison of the sensor characteristics with what is required by specific military applications. The comparison will produce a quantitative basis for selection of sensors for specific applications as well as for directing research and development efforts.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a project that will enable TNO and our customers to quickly estimate the usability of ( experimental/quantum ) sensor systems in the military domain. The planned activities for the internship include:
- Assisting in the design and development of the GUI.
- Working closely with our development team to ensure that the tool meets the requirements of the project.
- Participating in code reviews and testing to ensure the quality of the final product.
- Writing documentation (manual, software design description, etc.).
This is a full-time, paid internship with flexible hours for the duration of 3 month. You will be working in the department of Weapon Systems at our location in The Hague in close collaboration with 3 or 4 colleagues with different backgrounds such as software development, weapon performance analysis, aerospace engineering and systems engineering. As a member of the team you will have the opportunity to join department meetings, lectures and events provided by our staff association. Take into account that you need to apply for a security clearance before you can enter our location, which generally takes at least 8 weeks. If you are passionate about software development and have a desire to learn and grow, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity.
What we expect from you
- Currently enrolled in a computer science or related program on HBO level.
- Strong understanding of programming concepts, particularly in Python and/or MS Excel.
- Experience with GUI development and design is a plus.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
