Internship | Technology development using Mode Mixing Fiber

About this position

Optical fibers are used in various optical systems for many different applications. Within the scope of this project, optical MultiMode Fibers (MMF) will be used as light distribution media to transport light from source to illumination location over a relative short distance (between 1 to 50 m). Using MMF high power light can be deliver from a point source flexibly to a designed and sometime hard-to-reach location. Typical applications can be found in: semiconductor, space, medical, energy and many others. For all these systems the light properties of the optical beam exiting the optical fiber is crucial for the right operation of the system. It becomes challenging with high power coherent light source, such as lasers. The optical properties at the output of the fiber, such as beam profile, polarization, fiber mode structures, speckle artifacts, are all largely dependent on the use of the fiber. Those effect are due to the multiple optical modes propagating through the fiber and the interference between different modes. To homogenize the output, the propagating modes need to be mixed and ‘scrambled’. Various techniques exist can help to achieve this goal.

What will be your role?

In this project, an overview and comparison of MMF mode scrambling techniques will be made. First, the light in-coupling and out distribution of MMF will be characterized by experimental measurement. In following, mode scrambling techniques will be added to the measurement setup and will be tested. Through the data processing, the improvement by optimization strategies will be analyzed. The measurement setup needs to designed and the hardware such as light sources and camera’s has to be selected. You will work together with a team of optics scientist, optical engineer and system engineer on the technology development towards a few selected applications.
