Internship | Modelling and Predictions for vehicles with on-board photovoltaics - impact of shading

About this position

Solar Mobility and the role photovoltaics can play in transportation are important and very current research topics. TNO Solar Energy has developed an Energy Flow Model for predicting the contribution Vehicle Integrated Photovoltaics can make to the energy requirements of vehicles. This project aims to expand on and improve this model to determine the different shading losses that can occur in these systems, and for different applications.

What will be your role?

You will be developing a model and approach to quantify the impact of shade, both static shade, while a vehicle is parked, and dyanmic shade while the vehicle is in motion. Particular focus will be on the urban and city environment - considering shading from buildings along particular routes.

You will consider different applications, for example. A passenger car, a small delivery van and a robot taxi. And apply these use cases to different locations.

What we expect from you

  • You will be motivated and have a clear interest in the topic of solar mobility.
  • You will be studying for your Masters in a relevant discipline.
  • You will have good communication skills, modeling skills and an eye for the 'bigger picture'.
