Senior consultant built environment
Contributing to the world of tomorrow. Envision it. Become a researcher at TNO in Amsterdam.
About this position
As a consultant, you will work on projects focussing on tomorrow’s energy grid. Heat and electricity supply and generation play an important role in this. How do we ensure moderate and distributed consumption, how do we prevent overloading, and what does integration with heat supply solutions look like in the future? What role will storage play and how can it be implemented? You will contribute to applied research and studies into the changes in infrastructures and new market models required for the transition to a sustainable, climate-neutral built environment.
What will be your role?
As a consultant, you’re an important link between our clients and the project teams. You’ll work on several research projects simultaneously at different stages of implementation. For example, you will start the day working on a project proposal in collaboration with ministries, municipalities, and other stakeholders on making neighbourhoods natural gas-free. Later on, you might brainstorm with colleagues from different teams about the development of innovative energy calculation models for the implementation of heat networks. On another day, you will prepare a client meeting and put the finishing touches to the final report, translating recent insights and new knowledge into clear texts for policymakers or decision-makers in companies. You will also oversee adjacent projects at TNO to respond well to technical and societal issues arising from the climate objectives. In this position, you will collaborate on the implementation of applied research and the detailed elaboration of the possible solutions. You will work on concepts for the future, which you also know how to make applicable.
You will work with 80 highly skilled and driven professionals within the Energy Transition Studies (ETS) department in Amsterdam. This department carries out interdisciplinary research and policy studies on the physical, technological, and economic changes required for the energy and resource transitions, as well as their institutional and social aspects. Research projects and (policy) studies are carried out at both the national and international level. ETS collaborates extensively with governments, companies, consultants, and universities. Together, we contribute to reducing CO2 emissions to 55% by 2030 and net zero by 2050.
What we expect from you
At TNO, you are never alone. You are surrounded by various colleagues and external partners. This requires good collaboration and communication skills. You also understand the art of looking beyond what is already there. You are not afraid to break new ground and contribute to solutions for the energy transition that didn’t exist yesterday or weren’t even imaginable.
You are able to contribute to our ambitions in a highly relevant line of research within TNO. You easily make the connection between societal challenges and technological opportunities and translate this into innovative project proposals. You also enjoy giving substance to the projects, for example by diving into the data and analysing it. You are responsible for correctly communicating project results, both orally and in writing. Writing (scientific) reports comes easily to you. You can put your content knowledge to good use in acquiring new work, communicating directly with clients as well as internal stakeholders and external partners. You are eager to learn, but also pragmatic. You are able to grasp complex subject matter quickly and then communicate it clearly and simply.
Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:
- A master’s degree or PhD in engineering or applied physics, economics, econometrics, electrical engineering, or a similar field.
- At least 10 years of working experience in applied research, preferably at an engineering firm or consulting organisation.
- Strong motivation to make a visible contribution to the energy transition.
- You are independent and proactive and take responsibility for your own tasks.
- You have a critical eye for your own work.
- You are both quantitatively and qualitatively strong
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, both in Dutch and English.
