Radar Signal Processing Expert | The Hague

This is our time to build a safer tomorrow! Are you the Signal Processing expert with experience in Radar or similar applications who will make a mark on our time? Then apply to TNO now.

What will be your role?

Introduction
Radar systems are indispensable in the modern world. Whether for naval vessels, military drones or self-driving vehicles, radars provide a reliable picture of the environment, day and night and in all weather conditions. TNO possesses exceptional knowledge in the field of radar technology, ranging from FMCW and MIMO radars to advanced phased arrays. As a signal processing expert at TNO you truly work in the front line of phased array radar technology.
If you are up to being challenged in an environment that is among the top in the world and if you are excited at the prospect of working with experienced colleagues on Active Electronically Scanned Array radars and digital radars: then this might be your chance! We offer a stimulating environment with world-renowned experts and career opportunities that match what you do best - today and in the future.

You will work at the Radar Technology department within the Defence, Safety and Security unit of TNO. At the Radar Technology department we passionately work on technological breakthroughs for state-of-the-art RF sensor systems. Extra information on the department can be found here: Radar technology | TNO. Technology is changing extremely fast, resulting in new threats to the safety of our society but also in opportunities to realize what was not possible before.

What will be your role?
The constant evolution of sensor radar systems dramatically increases the volume and quality of data. The environment in which radar systems have to operate is also highly dynamic, while the spectrum is increasingly more congested and contested. New waveforms and signal processing must keep up to extract the relevant information required for supporting the decision making process. Which is why you will be designing, examining, evaluating and implementing novel, optimal waveforms in combination with the latest digital signal processing techniques. This includes detection, estimation, tracking, classification, digital beamforming, MIMO processing, etc. As a signal processing expert you will transform complex signal processing problems into well-formulated mathematical methodologies. In addition, you quantify platform-dependent performance differences and define optimal processing strategies for newly developed sensor concepts.

As Europe’s leading R&D partner in the field of radar technology, TNO’s Radar Technology department develops anything from complete system concepts and architectures to integrated microwave circuits and antennas. We research and apply novel techniques like compressive sensing, deep learning and quantum-enhanced radar technology. We have a large and strong team of radar engineers, consisting not solely of signal processing experts but also include software engineers, hardware developers, EM/antenna designers and other experts, who come together in an open-minded and relaxed atmosphere to respond to the needs of our clients. We are driven by a desire to make technological breakthroughs and we welcome your ideas.

What we expect from you

You are an analytical and organized team player that communicates easily with colleagues from different areas of expertise and different backgrounds. You master the fundamental theory of adaptive algorithms, machine learning, waveform design, data and array signal processing. And are keen to extend your knowledge in these fields. Working at the interface between research and applications, you think up creative ideas and enthuse your colleagues and stakeholders to embrace your initiatives. You can express yourself clearly when explaining the intricacies of data and signal processing to clients and other stakeholders.

Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:

  • A Master’s Degree and a few years of relevant experience or PhD in electrical engineering, physics or computer science.
  • A scientific background in one or more of these fields: information theory, statistical signal processing, and detection and estimation theory.
  • Experience in Radar or similar applications (including, for example, telecommunications) is a plus.
  • Intimate knowledge of MATLAB and/or Python.
  • A desire to work minimally 3 days in the office (The Hague) for interaction with your team and the Radar Technology colleagues.
