Internship | Modelling of separation enhanced methanol / DME synthesis from CO2 and H2

About this position

CO2 utilization has gained significant attention in recent years as a path towards circular carbon. Although many existing routes have been explored to various carbon products (e.g. methane, methanol, dimethyl ether), implementation is hindered by high production cost. An innovative membrane reactor concept, with integrated cooling element is introduced to improve overall production cost by increasing the production of methanol and this minimizing the CO2 recycles. Within this reactor, water is removed from the catalytic bed using a membrane. As a result, the thermodynamic equilibrium limitation in methanol synthesis can be overcome leading to a separation enhanced reaction rate.

What will be your role?

The in-situ water separation concept shall be modelled in Matlab/Octave for a more in-depth understanding of the potential of the technology. The basis for the model is already available in terms of kinetics and equilibrium parameters for methanol reaction and subsequently dehydration of methanol to DME. The model should calculate the reaction composition along the length of the reactor with the reaction kinetics and the heat transfer and heat of the reaction in the radial direction and along the length of the reactor.
The predictive modelling results should provide insights about:

  • Production rate of the products assuming certain membrane selectivity;
  • How to optimize the integration of the reactor and the membrane;
  • The optimal dimensions of the catalyst bed, nature of the membrane and the space between the membrane and the cold finger.

The student will be working in the Synthetic Fuels group within the Gas treatment team at the SPES department. Our laboratory facilities are located in Rijswijk where the candidate is expected to execute the work. Since the work is theoretical, it is possible for the candidate to partially work from home after consultation with the supervisor.

What we expect from you

The ideal candidate is willing to work on innovative concepts to accelerate the energy transition and lower the CO2 impact by applying the captured CO2 as hydrocarbon source.
Moreover, since the assignment is mainly about modeling of the reactor concept in Matlab/Octave environment, the student must have experience in working with the mentioned software.

Regarding the duration of the assignment, we expect 7-9 months, which is the period covered by a regular master graduation thesis.
