Internship | Optimal scheduling strategy for fleet of electric vehicles

About this position

The introduction of battery-electric vehicles for transportation has enabled numerous advantages in reduction of harmful emissions, noise reduction, fewer mechanical components in the powertrain, among others. However, challenges also arise due to the technology being relatively new. We consider some of the challenges related to charging a complete fleet of electric vehicles. Such an activity requires the scheduling of resources (vehicles and chargers), with real-life constraints (such as number of chargers, availability in the grid power, etc) and a particular goal to achieve (e.g., guarantee vehicle availability, reduce energy consumption, etc).

What will be your role?

The objective of this assignment is to extend an already-implemented fleet charging strategy by improving on the existing models and assumptions. Your concrete tasks are as follows:

  • (quick) Literature review about fleet level charging algorithms.
  • Familiarization with already-implemented algorithm.
  • Design and application of new strategies.
  • Algorithm comparison against baseline version.
  • Reporting.

Note that this assignment corresponds to an internship (durations of a 2-3 months). However, by adding a research component it can be extended to a master thesis or an internship with master thesis.

What we expect from you

  • You have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, for example automotive engineering, systems and control, electrical engineering.
  • You are coursing a master in a relevant field, for example automotive engineering, systems and control, electrical engineering.
