Senior scientist energy markets & systems

Contribute to tomorrow’s world. Envision it. Become a Researcher at TNO in Amsterdam.

About this position

You will work on and develop models for the energy system of tomorrow. The development of the European electricity system (both generation and transmission) will occupy an important role in this in the next few years. How do we maximise capacity and avoid overloading, and how does integration with heat supply solutions look in the future? What role will storage play and how can it be implemented? You will conduct scientific research into the changes in energy markets and systems that are necessary for the transition to a sustainable, climate-neutral energy system.

What will be your role?

You will develop techno-economic models of EU energy markets and systems. You’ll work on several research projects simultaneously at different stages of implementation. For example, you might find yourself spending the morning setting up and running model scenarios, putting together and updating the necessary databases, and analysing, reporting and publishing the model results obtained; then in the afternoon you might be called upon to advise policy makers at regional, national and international level, energy companies and other stakeholders who are bringing about the energy transition; or preparing project proposals for national and international research programmes and consultancy assignments for ministries, provincial authorities, grid operators and other actors in the energy market. With your experience, you will see to it that the accumulated knowledge is distributed to policy makers and stakeholders in the energy sector.

You’ll work with 80 highly skilled professionals within the Energy Transition Studies (ETS) department in Amsterdam. This department carries out interdisciplinary research and policy studies on the physical, technological and economic changes required for the energy and resource transitions, as well as their institutional and social aspects. Research projects are carried out both at the national and international level and ETS collaborates extensively with public authorities, companies, consultants and universities. Together, we contribute to reducing CO2 emissions to 55% by 2030 and net zero by 2050.

You are engaging, motivated and proactive. You enjoy working in a multidisciplinary, international and gender-balanced team. You have an open mindset, enjoy learning from your colleagues and share knowledge within the team.
