Built Environment Energy Project Manager

This is your time to make a mark on our time as a project manager. Become a project manager at TNO in Delft.

What will be your role?

Your role is to successfully deliver innovative projects within the built environment. As a project manager, you’ll spearhead an extensive scope of projects. This could include new products, such as smart heat pumps or digital tools to optimise comfortable and efficient climate control in buildings. But also energy management systems of smart grids by data/AI. Or feasibility studies on new renovation concepts for 1930s homes, for example. Meanwhile, projects are ongoing in our brand-new testing facilities in the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Lab (HVAC) and Indoor Air Quality Lab (IAQ). On many of the projects, we work with progressive market players. Or more in house for the benefit of knowledge development for the market and society.

You’ll be tasked with coordinating and managing these complicated research and innovation projects. In many cases you will already be involved in the preparation, for example, by setting up collaborations with clients and/or other research organisations and applying for (grant) budgets. You will constantly switch between different projects, guaranteeing the objectives. You will manage the expectations and interests of the parties involved. You always think one step ahead and keep a close eye on planning and financial agreements. You’ll organise meetings to discuss the progress of projects, for example, with TNO's technical experts and collaboration partners (housing associations, manufacturers).

Within TNO, you’ll be working in the Buildings & Energy Systems (BES) research group, which is part of the MBE (Mobility & Built Environment) unit, a motivated, diverse, and international group of some 450 colleagues in total. BES counts 34 professionals. The energy transition in the built environment is a common thread in their activities. Sustainable indoor climate systems, making existing real estate and healthcare real estate more sustainable. On average, project managers lead three to six projects of different sizes at the same time. This means a great deal of variety and cross-fertilisation!

What we expect from you

Making sure projects (and cooperation between parties within projects) run smoothly – there’s nothing you enjoy more. You speak the language of the engineers but are also able to demonstrate your added value in discussions with other partners. You’re able to switch between projects and parties like no other, always getting the best out of a team. You set the goal for every project, while continuously ensuring that parties remain aware of it. You don’t shy away from administrative tasks; your precise and structured way of working ensures that everyone knows exactly where they stand and what the status of the project is. Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:

  • A master's degree or PhD, preferably in physics, (mechanical) engineering, building physics, technical business administration, innovation management, industrial design, or mathematics.
  • At least 5 years of experience as a project leader in a research environment.
  • Experience leading innovation projects in the construction and engineering sector is an advantage.
  • Experience with subsidy programmes, such as the TKI allowance scheme and/or Horizon 2020, is an advantage.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, both in Dutch and English (at least B1 level).
  • Preferably, IPMA-C certification or the equivalent.
