Internship | Energy use of ships at berth

The energy transition is one of the most important topics for maritime shipping for the coming years. An important aspect in designing solutions is to get better insight in the current energy use by ships and the greenhouse gas and other emissions (NOx, PM) associated to this. Specifically, there is a need for more knowledge on the energy use of ships that are at berth in ports. This is needed both for insights on the CO2 and NOx emissions in port areas, but also for the design of innovative solutions such as shore power for maritime ships. For gaining more knowledge on this topic, you will combine data analysis and interviews with ship owners, ports and associations.

For this assignment, you will perform research on the energy use of different vessel types (e.g. container vessels, cruise ships, tankers). Based on the results of previous research, data analyses (such as AIS, ship engines databases and EU monitoring systems) and contact with ship owners and other stakeholders, you will define the main emission parameters when ships are at berth.

You will work closely with the sustainable shipping team of TNO consisting of maritime and logistics experts, data analysts and ship engineering experts. Your assignment will be directly linked with work performed by the team.

Additionally you will be part of an energetic and social team who enjoys to have lunch walks, participate in sport activities and who enjoys after work drinks.
