Internship | Tyre wear particle emissions and their impact
About this position
Within the upcoming EURO 7 regulation by the European Commission there will be a limit on wear emissions from tyres. What do we expect from tyre wear emissions under real world conditions? And (how) can we measure tyre wear under realistic conditions? In this internship you will dive into the exciting new field of tyre wear emissions. Together with our TNO experts you will formulate answers to the questions above and help lay the foundations for this important new line of wear emissions research.
What will be your role?
For this internship you will dive into the interesting and upcoming new research line of tyre wear emissions. This is a relatively new field for which there is a significant lack of knowledge and experience on emissions under real world conditions. The intern will therefore have a sizable amount of leeway to take the research in their preferred direction. Most likely, however, the research will start with a thorough literature review finding and reading up upon other studies into tyre wear emissions and how their results can be benefitted from for the questions at hand. From the literature some first conclusions can be drawn such as the composition of the emissions, the order of magnitude we expect to see, on which (external) parameters the tyre wear emissions depend and even a first measurement set-up can be designed. Time permitting, a prototype of the measurement set-up can be built and data from a few tests may be collected and analysed. This is not mandatory given the short timeframe.
This research will be executed within the wear emissions expert team of TNO’s Sustainable Transport and Logistics division based in the Hague. The intern’s supervisor has many years of experience with wear emissions and measurement set-ups making sure any problems along the way can be dealt with appropriately. Apart from the research there will be ample opportunity for social interactions with STL and TNO: there are weekly intern meet-ups, team meetings, week starts and often impromptu drinks after work. The intern will be a full member to the STL team and will be invited to, and expected to participate in, all usual team activities.
