Dynamics Control specialist | Delft
Contributing to the future technology of industry. Envision it. Become a Dynamics & Control Specialist and a time setter at TNO in Delft.
About this position
Pushing the performance of high-tech instruments to its ultimate limits requires in-depth knowledge of dynamics and control. Will you help us to make the impossible possible? The research group Optomechatronics develops optomechanical and mechatronic systems for extreme performance in demanding environments. We push the limits of technology; to stimulate industry and enable scientific discovery. In addition to our internal research programs we execute large commercial projects for customers in the domains of Space & Science instrumentation and Semiconductor Equipment. Typical application domains for our dynamics & control specialists are ground-based astronomy (including adaptive optics), and free-space optical communication (including accurate pointing control of narrow laser beams). The role of the group within the strong global position of the Dutch mechatronics industry is that of supplier of breakthrough technology. The group has a close collaboration with several universities and research institutes and a large network in industry.
What will be your role?
As a dynamics and control specialist you are familiar with the fundamentals of eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes of mechanical structures and know how such dynamics affect the compliance and transmissibility of complex servo systems. You have the ability to derive (multi-dimensional) lumped-mass models of mechanical systems, and you preferably also have experience with processing modal analyses (such as FEM) into state-space models to predict dynamic behavior and feedback performance. You have expertise to validate dynamic performance in practice, i.e. you are familiar with system identification techniques and/or experimental modal analyses. You are comfortable in thinking and processing in the frequency domain, both when it comes to modeling and to experimental identification.
Moreover, you are experienced with control engineering terminology and master the essentials of linear control theory and controller synthesis. You can interpret Bode and Nyquist diagrams and can relate these to mechanical properties of the system. You are able to apply loop-shaping techniques for feedback controller design, assess the resulting closed-loop behavior of the whole system, and have experience with dynamic error budgeting. Preferably, you are also familiar with more advanced synthesis techniques such as robust and adaptive control, and know about their limitations. You can cope with the typical uncertainties of control performance predictions in early design phases of a new project, as well as the challenges faced in the laboratory during realization and execution phases. Moreover, you enjoy looking beyond your own expertise, and look forward to work together with specialists in optics, mechanics, physics, in multidisciplinary projects.
What we expect from you
To be successful in this role you have:
- A MSc and preferably a PhD in mechanical engineering with a specialization in dynamics and control.
- At least 3 years of experience in a similar position.
- A pioneering mentality, and you are comfortable with the uncertainty that comes with scientific and engineering challenges.
- Excellent communication skills, energy, creativity and a boundless curiosity, wherewith you can convince and inspire colleagues and customers alike.
