Internship | Modelling for shaped flexible photovoltaic laminates

About this position

Integrated photovoltaic (PV) applications where solar modules are integrated into vehicle, building and infrastructural elements have been gaining popularity. Such elements require PV laminates of several shapes and sizes, and include non-planar surfaces, such as corrugated rooftiles. In particular for non-planar applications, there are additional challenges not relevant for classical solar panels. Non-uniform irradiance and shading are more likely for the non-planar geometries, and shaping flexile PV laminates can result in significant built-in stresses. Both these effects make performance and lifetime of elements with integrated non-planar PV laminates less predictable. Modelling the behaviour of the laminates can provide more insight.

What will be your role?

In the scope of this internship, a solar module model is aimed to be developed for integrated PV on non-planar surfaces. This developed model will be suitable for estimating built-in stresses, cell-level behaviour as well as energy yield in a given time and location. The project includes the following tasks:

  • Model development;
  • Device and system level simulations;
  • Experimental verification.

This internship will be performed within the Integration and Application (I&A) team at TNO Solar Technologies and Applications (STA). The I&A team works on innovative solutions for application and integration of solar energy, in particular aiming at low-cost and reliable flexible PV laminates.

What we expect from you

You are motivated to work on technological innovations with a direct impact on lowering carbon emission in energy production. You have a strong background in physics and/or mathematics, and preferably some experience in using modelling software. You are also not afraid to do hands-on work in the lab, required for verification of your model.
You are able to work independently, while keeping your colleagues within the team informed about your progress and follow-up steps.
