Internship | Automated characterization of spin-qubit devices
Want to make your mark on our time? Become a [XX] at TNO in [XX]!
About this position
Spin qubits in Silicon are a promising candidate for quantum computing due to their similarity in fabrication to classical transistors and thus compatibility with current large-scale semiconductor device manufacturing. We aim to scale the number of qubits to stimulate the formation of the quantum computing supply chain by working on almost the entire quantum computing stack: from the in-house fabrication of qubit devices, to calibrating the qubits and providing public access to it online on our quantum computing demonstrator Quantum Inspire.
What will be your role?
After a quantum device is fabricated in the cleanroom, it needs to be tuned up, where suitable parameters need to be identified for the operation of the qubits. For this, a series of experiments is conducted and the results are analysed. However, as we scale the number of qubits in our devices, manual tune up of these devices becomes more complex, making it impractical. One way to combat this is to automate parts of the screening process to gather statistics on device performance, and provide input in the quality of device fabrication.
The aim of the project is to write software to automate the initial screening process of our 6-qubit devices. You will write code in Python which automatically analyses electrical measurements, makes a decision whether the device is up to specifications and decides what action to take based on the latter. Involved in the project will be several aspects of physics and engineering, from semiconductor physics to automated device control and data readout/processing.
This student project will be an internship with a duration of 3-4 months.
What we expect from you
You are a Masters student in the last phase of your study in a relevant field, preferably with some knowledge of one of the following:
- Quantum systems, quantum computing or semiconductor research.
- Programming (Python or a similar language is preferred)
- Experience in developing and conducting scientific research
