Internship | Improving LCA Software for prospective LCA of PV technologies

About this position

To evaluate the prospective environmental performance of PV technologies, prospective life cycle assessment is applied (LCA). The evaluation of future scenario allows to decide on the most sustainable future. During the internship you will support in improving the evaluations by prospective LCA.

What will be your role?

Different licensed and open source LCA softwares are available to model the life cycle and assess the impacts of diverse products. Even when based in the same inventory databases, using different soft-ware can lead to differences in results due to differences in implementation and coupling of diverse flows. SimaPro is an established commercial software developed by PreSustainability. A newer open-source software is phyton based Brightway, available also through user interface Activity Browser. This tool offers a wider range of possibilities in terms of prospective LCA. Within TNO, CSI (circularity, sus-tainability, impact) ambitions to use Simapro as well as Brightway to profit from long-year software experience on one hand and on the other hand make use of more flexible modelling options. However, different results for the same project for a couple of impact categories (mainly related to toxicity, but also resources) requires further exploration. The aim of this internship is to compare the results, flows and impact factors for a specified existing project (PV modules) and identify find the most important reasons for these deviations. Based in that, a guideline for software communication in future models can be developed.
