Your role
Traditionally large radar systems need to be scaled down for today's operational platforms such as unmanned aerial vehicles, small drones, and small satellites. As the potential threats become increasingly diverse in nature, it’s desirable to use advanced radar imaging strategies to better identify and classify threats. TNO is developing new radar technology for such compact radar applications. As a SAR expert, you perform theoretical performance analysis as well as modelling and specification of new system concepts, with a good understanding of both the RF and digital processing aspects of such a system. In addition to the design of SAR systems and performance evaluation, you’re involved in the development of algorithms for new imaging radar applications, demonstrating advanced capabilities. You'll also be involved in testing and evaluating experimental systems up to TRL level 7.
As a leading European R&D partner in the field of radar technology, TNO's Radar Technology department develops the whole range from complete system concepts and architectures to integrated microwave circuits and antennas. We research and apply new techniques, such as compressive sensing, deep learning, and quantum radar technology. We have a large, strong team of radar experts, software engineers, hardware developers, EM/antenna designers, and other experts, working together in an open and relaxed atmosphere to meet our clients' needs. We’re driven by a desire for technological breakthroughs, and your ideas are welcome.
What we expect from you
You’re an analytically minded, structured team player who communicates easily with colleagues from other areas of expertise and from different backgrounds. Your heart is in RF sensors, signal processing, systems engineering, and space applications, and you love nothing more than expanding your knowledge in these areas. You have hands-on experience in SAR system design and imaging strategies, algorithms, and concepts for information exploitation. Working at the interface between research and applications, you come up with creative ideas and know how to get your colleagues and stakeholders excited about your initiatives. You’re able to clearly explain the intricate details of aerospace radar to clients and other parties. You’re willing to work at least 3 days at the office (The Hague) to interact with your team and Radar Technology colleagues.
Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:
- A master's degree or PhD in electrical engineering or physics.
- At least 5 years of work experience is preferred, but we’re also interested if you have less experience or have just graduated.
- A scientific background in one or more of these areas: trade-offs and performance evaluation in SAR system design, radar imaging techniques, RF electronics and antennas, signal processing, SAR algorithms, implementation of detection and tracking algorithms.
- Working knowledge of MATLAB and/or Python.
- Working knowledge of systems engineering principles.
- Experience in testing and verification of SAR systems.
What you'll get in return
Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 4.156,- and € 6.888,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.
Perhaps you would like to grow your career in the direction of commerce or consultancy? Or would you like to become a project manager? Immerse yourself in sustainable innovations? Or carve out a career as a technical expert?
TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:
