What will be your role?
Data may be collected from a wide variety of public and commercial databases, literature and internet sources. The needed data sets will be specified, curated and constructed in close contact with the other colleagues who will be using these data, often in various modeling and evaluation projects. Processing, storage and visualization of the results of these evaluations may also be part of the activities.
Together with the integral team of data and modeling experts this data will translate into mathematical models to make statements about the circularity of society, incl. products and processes, thus making a crucial contribution to the transition to a circular economy. These are socially relevant issues that TNO investigates in projects and consortia.
We are looking for a data analytics engineer who has a keen interest in sustainability and circular economy, and has an interest in understanding the connection between the qualitative and quantitative world. Together with internal and external parties, you will shape the development and expansion of a database structure. This also means that part of your work involves writing high-quality project proposals and scientific articles with others and working closely together with scientists from the areas of circular plastics, microplastics, circular electronics and critical raw materials.
What we expect from you
Effective communication both internally and externally. With members of the project team, business consultants, and pioneers in the field at TNO. You are grounded and practical. What else do you have to offer?
- You hold a Msc or PhD degree in a relevant discipline, such as data science, physics, chemistry, statistics, computer science with relation to sustainability.
- You have proven experience with retrieving, harmonising, organising and storing large datasets. You can help to manage and set-up a data infrastructure for the data and modelling team.
- You are a proficient programmer, preferably in R and Python, with expertise in distributed (cloud-based) computation. Experience with agile working (Scrum & Gitlab) is a plus
- You have strong collaboration and networking skills and know how to connect people.
- You have excellent command of the English language, both spoken and written. Knowledge of the Dutch language is appreciated.

Within TNO, you will work in the Circularity & Sustainability Impact department. This is a versatile department with nearly 50 passionate researchers, consultants, and mathematical wizards in the field of life cycle assessments (LCA) and other impact methods. They have domain knowledge of the recycling and chemical industry and extensive knowledge of analyzing and predicting the impact of human actions on the climate and planetary boundaries. Additionally, this team helps policymakers in governments and decision-makers in companies in the transformation to a more sustainable and cleaner economy. The team you will be a part of is based in Utrecht but collaborates extensively with other teams (e.g., in The Hague, Amsterdam, Geleen and the Eindhoven region).
The selection process
Please apply before December 4, 2023. The selection process comprises two interview rounds. The preliminary interview takes place on December 13, 2023. The second interview round has yet to be scheduled. In a final meeting we will discuss the terms of employment and your tailored benefits package. We aim to finalize the entire process within four weeks.
The selection process may include an online assessment and a reference check.
