Internship | High resolution modeling of reactive nitrogen: the role of inorganic aerosol formation
About this position
Deposition of reactive nitrogen (Nr) species to nature areas is a hot topic in Dutch politics. To effectively assess the influence of measures to limit Nr-deposition from farms and other sources, we have been applying a high-resolution model (DALES) that simulates the emission, dispersion and deposition of ammonia (NH3), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and other reactive species with a resolution of 25 meters on the domain of several square kilometers. Recently, we expanded the model with a reaction mechanism that represents the main chemical transformations of reactive nitrogen in the atmosphere. In the atmosphere, these species can form aerosol particles which are transported and deposited over large distances. However, evaluation of the ability of the model to reproduce observations is essential to build trust in the capability to simulate the relevant processes.
What will be your role?
In this internship, you will work on the validation of a DALES simulation that uses a gas-phase chemistry module to simulate the precursors for secondary inorganic aerosol formation. You will evaluate the capability of the model to represent the diurnal cycle of these gas-phase precursors , and assess which factors drive this variability. Detailed observational datasets including concentrations of NH3, NOx and SO2 are available to compare the simulations against.
What we expect from you
We are looking for an enthusiastic, and curious student working on graduating from their masters with knowledge of meteorology and modeling. You should be willing to learn new technologies and are able to think through abstract concepts towards their practical implication.
You are working towards a master’s degree in meteorology or a related field. Some experience with modeling is required. Experience with large eddy simulation and with a scripting language (e.g. Python) is recommended.
