Scientist Virtual Mission Areas

Do you want to be a time setter at TNO? Then come and strengthen TNO's Mission Simulation & Training research group as a Scientist Virtual Mission Areas.

About this position

Using simulations to prepare military and police personnel for their missions. Working on the latest innovations to further develop virtual worlds. As a Scientist Virtual Mission Areas at TNO, you’ll have a unique opportunity to play a crucial role in this field. You’ll contribute to projects with direct impact. You’ll develop solutions that not only promote the modernisation of the armed forces and the police, but are actually deployed in simulators, virtual reality displays, and other advanced systems. With your expertise, you’ll contribute to a safer future, where innovation is the key to success.

What will be your role?

As a Scientist Virtual Mission Areas, you’ll work in the Mission Simulation & Training research group on the exciting process of creating virtual worlds as quickly and accurately as possible. With these worlds, professionals in the security domain are immersed in the areas where they carry out their missions and operations. You’ll work in a team that specialises in building and applying the virtual mission areas for clients such as the Dutch Ministry of Defence and the police. Based on a wide range of innovative techniques, you and your colleagues will provide answers to a variety of questions from clients. You’ll do so in multidisciplinary project teams with experts from other TNO departments in which all knowledge is available on how innovative technology can be used effectively by players in the security domain.

What kinds of projects are involved? How about fully automatic modelling of a 3D environment from map and satellite information? Or maybe you excel at analysing point clouds collected by drones? We’re always looking for techniques to accelerate the creation of models that users can rely on. Your results come to life in our clients' systems. This could be a simulator, but also a virtual reality display, touch table, or even a smartphone on which soldiers literally carry the virtual mission area in their pockets. One thing is certain: the models and simulations we develop are of great value to our clients. They’re keen to use the solutions we have come up with over the past few years to get their work done faster and better. With this work, you’ll contribute to the continuous modernisation of the armed forces and the police.

What we expect from you

You like your work to be of significance to innovation in the military and security domain. It’s also important that you can handle sensitive information properly. Collaborating in project teams and with partners is one of your strengths, partly due to your communication skills in Dutch and English. You’re alert to opportunities for improvement, actively communicate them to your team, and take responsibility for your contribution to projects.

Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:

  • A university degree in a STEM field, preferably in geo sciences, or else in computer science or aerospace engineering, possibly complemented by work experience;
  • A clear affinity for – or preferably experience with – working with geographical data and GIS software, such as ArcGIS and QGIS. Relevant experience may also have been gained during your studies. You see the automatic processing of geographical data into a working model as an enjoyable challenge and are able to work on it independently;
  • You enjoy presenting your research findings in presentations and publications;
  • You’re familiar with modern software development environments and have excellent programming skills with languages such as C++, C#, and Python. Where necessary, you’re happy to update your skills in this area.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 3.300,- and € 3.900,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

Perhaps you would like to grow your career in the direction of commerce or consultancy? Or would you like to become a project manager? Immerse yourself in sustainable innovations? Or carve out a career as a technical expert?

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
  • 33 days annual leave on a full-time basis.

  • We offer a comprehensive and flexible mobility plan that also includes full compensation for public transportation for commuting and business travel.
  • Great social events with your team and other TNO colleagues. That’s how you will get to know a lot of people really quickly.
  • Flexible working hours, the possibility to work parttime (32 of 36 hours) and the possibility of working from home.
  • Access to our Talent Development Programme.
  • Networking opportunities and great activities organized by Jong TNO.
  • A good pension scheme.
