Researcher Concrete Structures

Want to make your mark on our time? Become a researcher concrete structures at TNO!

About this position

Concrete structures play a key role in the liveability and mobility of our society. Their sustainability is therefore essential for society as a whole. At TNO, we work on making concrete structures more sustainable from two perspectives: extending the service life of existing structures and applying innovative solutions for new structures. The major challenges we encounter require in-depth knowledge of materials science, structural mechanics, reliability engineering, standards and regulations, and Forensic Engineering. We’re involved in developing, further elaborating, and applying this knowledge on a daily basis. In this context, we’re looking for a new, enthusiastic colleague who will work with us on innovations in reinforcement and repair techniques for existing buildings, and sustainable and circular solutions in new construction. Would you like to contribute to the structural safety of concrete structures in a sustainable built environment? If the answer is ‘yes’, please read on.

What will be your role?

As a researcher, you have in-depth knowledge of structural mechanics in general and concrete structures in particular. You want to develop professionally in the field of innovative reinforcement techniques for concrete structures and the use of non-traditional concrete types in structural concrete, contributing to the sustainability and circularity goals the Netherlands has to work towards over the coming years.

Your focus will be on issues related to structural safety. You’ll work together with top experts from relevant fields on methods for applying innovative reinforcement techniques constructively and for predicting the behaviour of structural concrete with innovative materials (concrete and/or reinforcement) as accurately as possible, so that you can draw up calculation rules on that basis. With your interest in the real-life application of these innovations, you know how to make the connection with practice and can translate practical questions into research questions.

You’ll usually be dealing with several projects at once, working independently and autonomously. Together with colleagues, you’ll answer questions from public and private parties seeking specialist knowledge from us. Examples include questions on the behaviour of new concrete types in structural applications, designing new reinforcement types, quantifying the safety level of complex structures, and advising on which innovative materials can be safely used in bridges, viaducts, and buildings. You’ll regularly attend consultations with clients, for example to clarify the research question or to present your results.

Your project teams are multidisciplinary and consist of researchers with expertise in various fields, including civil engineering, materials science, reliability engineering, construction technology, and data science. We also have laboratory facilities and experienced measurement technicians who are happy to help you take your research further. Within such a team, you’ll actively help devise possible solutions and carry out research. You’ll apply a wide range of approaches, including analytical methods, numerical models, or experimental techniques. In addition, you may perform in-situ measurements or inspections of existing structures or use Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) techniques to monitor and assess the integrity and performance of structures.

What we expect from you

You’ll demonstrate both analytical and synthetic skills by carefully interpreting and analysing all your research findings and coming up with creative solutions. You approach problems systematically and afterwards apply your written and oral skills to record the results accurately in a clear report and/or presentation. Furthermore, you show initiative and are able to work in a team to carry out research. You achieve your goals through collaboration and clear communication with all parties, both internal and external.

Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:

  • At least a university Master’s degree or preferably a PhD in civil engineering, with a specialisation in structural mechanics of concrete structures.
  • Knowledge of mechanics (especially concrete mechanics) and an interest in materials science, reliability engineering, construction technology, and non-traditional solutions for concrete structures are an advantage.
  • Knowledge of modern research methods and techniques.
  • Relevant work experience is welcome.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in Dutch or English.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 3.300,- and € 4.100,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

Perhaps you would like to grow your career in the direction of commerce or consultancy? Or would you like to become a project manager? Immerse yourself in sustainable innovations? Or carve out a career as a technical expert?

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:
