Scientist Water Elektrolysis | Petten

About this position

'Green' hydrogen plays a crucial role in all energy transition scenarios. It is vital for sectors that are difficult to decarbonize. Electrolysis is the technology used to produce renewable hydrogen and sustainable chemicals. Therefore, this is a key technology. Together with international top players from industry and academia, we accelerate the innovation and implementation of water electrolysis and power-to-x. This is research where TNO is at the forefront. Will you join us in pioneering, experimenting, and innovating in our Faraday laboratory?

What will be your role?

As a scientist, you will be part of the rapidly growing electrolysis team. Our research focuses on reducing the costs of the technology, from better and more sustainable materials to improved design of components, stacks, and the system in its industrial context. As a scientist, you will be responsible for setting up, conducting, and evaluating (experimental) research on Alkaline and AEM water electrolysis cells, with increasing independence.

You will report results and conclusions in a transparent and insightful manner, and you will have a proactive attitude in developing research proposals and projects with your colleagues. You stay updated on the state-of-the-art technologies at an international level and provide scientific depth in your results. You contribute to maintaining the highest quality of experimental research in our Faraday Lab.

Your home base within TNO Energy and Materials Transition is the Sustainable Technologies for Industrial Processes research group in Petten. An international, diverse, and growing team with more than fifteen nationalities of different ages and with much expertise. Your colleagues have backgrounds in physics, chemical engineering, materials science, electrochemistry, and project management. Each of us operates at the edge of our knowledge, making the work enjoyable and challenging.

What we expect from you

At TNO, you are never alone. You often have colleagues and external partners around you. This requires good collaboration and communication skills. You can organize your work well and keep an overview in collaborative projects as a ‘technical lead’. Additionally, you have the ability to look beyond what already exists. You dare to take new paths and thus contribute to solutions for the energy transition that did not exist or were not even conceivable yesterday.
You occasionally like to roll up your sleeves in our ‘manufacturing’ and ‘validation’ labs, working with our research engineers and technicians.

You have a critical attitude towards evaluating results. You are an open-minded, enthusiastic, creative, and result-oriented person. You can listen well and are able to translate a research question into a set of experiments. You can work in multidisciplinary teams and switch easily between different tasks within projects. You enjoy working in a multinational team.

Other skills and knowledge you bring to TNO:

  • A PhD in (electro)chemistry, physics, chemical or process engineering, or a Master’s with several years of relevant research experience;
  • Research experience with electrochemical systems;
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English;
  • Knowledge of Dutch or willingness to learn Dutch at the highest NT2 level.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 4.300,- and € 6.000,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:
