Data scientist sustainable mobility

About this position

Discover the world of data and sustainability at TNO as a data scientist for sustainable mobility. At our headquarters in The Hague, you will work with advanced data sets to analyse the impact of vehicle emissions on our environment. Your activities will contribute to policies and innovations that will improve our air quality and accelerate the transition to cleaner mobility. What will be your role?

You will work with large data sets to recognise patterns and identify trends that are crucial for developing cleaner road traffic. For example, you will analyse emissions under different driving conditions and link these data to policymaking at EU level. Your work will focus on programming, linking data sets, building models, and understanding complex interactions between emissions and forms of mobility. You will present your findings in a comprehensible and engaging manner. This will help policymakers and industry make decisions on more sustainable mobility solutions.

As a data scientist, you will also help shape the future of mobility. You will research trends and developments reaching to 2030 or 2040, actively contributing to the formation of strategic policies and long-term visions. Furthermore, you will regularly visit our vehicle lab to observe measurements in practice, which will strengthen your analyses. In the Sustainable Transport and Logistics department, you will work closely with your project team. Here, you will have the space to explore the organisation and your own development opportunities. What we expect from you

With your enthusiasm for vehicle technology and sustainable transport, you enjoy contributing to development, both technically and in relation to policy. You combine independence with excellent collaboration skills and know when coordination with colleagues is needed to ensure the quality and relevance of projects. You approach challenges proactively and with a focus on results, asking for help where necessary. Your structured approach helps you analyse complex data effectively and distinguish between primary and secondary issues.

Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:

  • A university Master's degree or PhD in a relevant field, such as mathematics/technical mathematics, chemistry, econometrics, computer science, or physics.
  • Experience in programming and preferably data modelling.
  • Experience with data analysis tools and programming languages such as Python, SQL, Fortran, and C.
  • Preferably experience in scientific research and active involvement in experiments and measurements.
  • A good command of Dutch as well as English, preferably, as both are essential for written reporting and communication with Dutch-speaking and international colleagues.

The selection process

Please apply before the 30th of June, 2024. The selection process comprises two interview rounds. The preliminary interview takes place on the 15th, 16th and 17th of July, 2024. The second interview round has been scheduled on the 23rd, 25th and 30th of July, 2024. In a final meeting we will discuss the terms of employment and your tailored benefits package. We aim to finalize the entire process within four weeks.

A test of analysis and programming skills may be part of the selection procedure. We would also like to receive your grade list from your highest education at the time of application.

The selection process may include an online assessment and a reference check.

A certificate of Conduct (VOG) is required before starting a new job at TNO.

As you will be working for clients in the domain of defence and security, a Certificate of No Objection issued by AIVD (The Dutch General Information and Security Service) is mandatory. This means you will have to undergo a security screening. Read more about security screening.
