Scientist New Economies | Amsterdam

Want to make your mark on our time? Become a scientist at TNO in Amsterdam!

About this position

As a scientist in the Energy Transition Studies research group in Amsterdam, you will work closely with dedicated professionals on research projects and policy questions focused on the energy transition. You will operate at the intersection of social innovation, societal structures, and the built environment. Together with your colleagues, you will contribute to reducing CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050.

What will be your role?

Our societal well-being is not solely defined by GDP growth. The exact nature of this well-being and its relationship to CO2 emissions, energy and material use, and planetary boundaries is the subject of the societal and scientific ‘beyond growth’ debate. This debate is central to the New Economies research focus. In this focus area, we explore new societal solutions for systemic change that lead to reduced energy and material use within an economic, social, and sustainability context. We do this through qualitative comparative case study analysis, developing storylines and scenarios, policy evaluation, policy experiments, and public support research. As a scientist, you will participate in projects in this area and help shape the research further.

The Energy Transition Studies (ETS) research group develops knowledge and provides strategic advice on the transition to a sustainable energy system in the Netherlands. This research group is growing rapidly due to increasing attention on the energy transition in general and our research results in particular. TNO operates on a non-commercial basis as a ‘knowledge broker’ between governments, market parties, and knowledge institutions. The research group is highly regarded by our clients and partners such as ministries in the Netherlands and other countries, the European Commission, companies, industry associations, other knowledge institutions, and other organizations working on the energy transition in the built environment.

ETS works with an international, multidisciplinary team of social scientists, engineers, scenario builders, and economists to find solutions to the behavioural, societal, and techno-economic challenges of the energy transition. The roles, motivations, and (im)possibilities of governments, companies, and residents to contribute to the transition process at the international, national, and local levels are central to our research.

What we expect from you

You enjoy communicating with peers, including those from other disciplines (technicians, economists, modelers, lawyers, etc.). You like working in an interdisciplinary team on various projects. You also have a pragmatic approach and a strong drive to keep the bigger picture in mind, while also being positively critical.

Other skills and knowledge you bring to TNO:

  • A university master’s degree in political economy, political science, public administration, social environmental science, sociology, or equivalent.
  • At least 4 years of relevant work experience with Beyond Growth and/or Broad Welfare research and new business models that fit with it, for example through a Master’s or PhD thesis.
  • Experience working at the intersection of quantitative and qualitative research.
  • Excellent command of Dutch and English, both spoken and written.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 4.000,- and € 5.000,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180).
