About this position
The Photonic Integration Technology Center (PITC) is a leading R&D institute, founded by the Eindhoven University of Technology (TUe), the University of Twente (UT), the Netherlands organization for applied scientific research (TNO located at Holst Centre) and PhotonDelta. PITC's mission is to accelerate the uptake of integrated photonics by helping industrial partners close the bridge from research to commercialisation and help to solve some of society’s biggest challenges, by working on applications ranging from road safety and health monitoring to energy-efficient data handling and communication to data security. Then you are welcome at TNO-PITC in Enschede, a joint initiative of TNO, Eindhoven University of Technology, University of Twente and PhotonDelta, supported by leading partners from the photonic chip industry. Together with the team you are responsible for developing, optimizing and managing the fabrication and integration processes used to create photonic integrated circuits based on low loss optical wave guides, ultra-low loss modulators on SiN for quantum and microwave photonics applications. The goal is to ensure that our processes are efficient, cost-effective, and produce high-quality products that meet our customer specifications. If you have experience in thin-film technology, cleanroom fabrication and nano-electronics we encourage you to apply. A background in integrated photonics is a plus.
What will be your role?
In this role, you will:
- Explore various approaches to deposit and integrate thin-film piezoelectric materials such as PZT and aluminum nitride with low-loss silicon nitride waveguides.
- Realize stress-based light modulation with very low energy consumption.
- Exploit linear electro-optic (Pockels) effect to demonstrate high speed electro-optical modulation.
- Realize second-order nonlinear processes on a chip, with low-loss and high-quality resonators, and demonstrate advantageous in various applications.
- Interact with specialists from UT and TNO and contribute to roadmap development related to photonic integration.
- Participate with expertise and take responsibility in ongoing collaborative projects with international and local customers.
What we expect from you
- PhD degree in Applied Physics, Nanoscience or related discipline with a proven affinity with advanced semiconductor physics and thin-film technology.
- 4+ years’ experience in technology development, working in a cleanroom, with profound know-how on thin-film deposition and (photolithographic) patterning, and device physics.
- Hands-on and taking responsibility, able to organize (practical) work efficiently and cooperatively.
- Excellent communication skills in English.

The selection process
