About this position
The team of materials scientists within the TNO Biobased & Circular Technologies research group supports TNO research groups and the industry on a wide range of materials science issues. This includes innovative developments and advice regarding material selection, damage research, corrosion, and the characterisation of a wide variety of materials in use. For materials research, the team has five well-equipped laboratories including microscopic techniques (light and electrons), spectrometric techniques (FT-IR and Raman), physical-thermal methods (such as TGA, DSC, viscometry), and electrochemical characterisation methods for corrosion studies.
What will be your role?
You’ll be working in a team with 3 colleagues. As a materials science lab technician, you’ll use the available techniques to carry out experimental materials science research within projects. In consultation with the project leader, you’ll coordinate the materials research programme in detail. You’ll carry out the required research and report the results including any details to the relevant colleague or project leader. In consultation with an experienced materials scientist or other TNO colleagues, you’ll arrive at a recommendation or diagnosis.
One moment, you’ll be faced with a question from SMEs to which a quick answer is expected. At other times, you’ll participate in a larger TNO R&D project or project for a commercial client. In all cases, there’s a wide variety of work, and great flexibility and dynamism will be expected of you. Your own input is appreciated in this regard.
You’ll also take care of laboratory management and manage and (organize) the maintenance of laboratory equipment.
What we expect from you
You’re a result-oriented, creative, proactive, and independent person who is open to new developments and likes varied work. You like to carry out practical work, and actively contributing to the projects you work on. You can work well within multidisciplinary teams with different levels of education and various professional disciplines.
Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:
- A completed higher professional education (HBO) degree with materials science knowledge or an secondary vocational degree with several years of relevant work experience.
- You preferably have knowledge of several of the mentioned characterisation techniques and are willing to build up missing knowledge and skills.
- A client-oriented attitude and good communication skills to report on the progress and results of the work to your colleagues.
- Good safety awareness and a valid SOS-SCC diploma or willingness to obtain this diploma.
- A good written and spoken command of both Dutch and English.

The selection process
