About this position

TNO is an independent research organization that leverages its expertise and scientific research to make a significant contribution to the earning capacity of the Netherlands and to the quality of society as a whole. Our professionals are among the world's leading scientists and experts. Every day, approximately 4,700 colleagues work together to develop innovative solutions that strengthen the Dutch economy, enhance societal resilience, and accelerate major transitions.

The Energy & Materials Transition (EMT) unit manages a broad portfolio of research and innovation initiatives. Together with our partners, we help accelerate the energy transition by providing knowledge, systems thinking, and effective solutions. This enables businesses and governments across the Netherlands and Europe to make informed decisions and seize opportunities that contribute to a sustainable and livable world by 2050.

As a unit, we are addressing several major societal challenges that require continuous organizational development and improvement. This ensures that our colleagues can effectively respond to evolving market needs and maximize our impact.

What will be your role?

As a Senior Internal Communications Advisor, you will play a pivotal role in guiding the EMT unit through organizational developments and change from an internal communications perspective. Drawing on your vision and expertise, you will advise management and lead communication initiatives across the unit.

Through effective communication strategies, practical action plans, and engaging content, you will connect with diverse audiences and help create an environment where employees feel informed, engaged, and empowered to perform at their best. You will align the objectives and communication style of various projects with the motivations and needs of a highly diverse workforce, ranging from scientists and researchers to specialists in support functions. In doing so, you will help every EMT colleague thrive and contribute to our shared goals.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the internal communication strategy and action plans in line with the unit’s objectives.
  • Proactively advise management on effective communication approaches and channels, and develop clear key messages to support organizational change.
  • Advise and coach the Managing Director on communication related to unit-wide events and presentations.
  • Align corporate internal communication initiatives with the communication needs of the EMT unit, and vice versa.
  • Create and edit clear, compelling communication materials, including online town halls and team meetings, newsletters, intranet articles, presentations, videos, and other relevant channels.
  • Organize the annual EMT Unit Day.
  • Ensure consistent and effective internal communication by gathering, translating, and distributing relevant information in an accessible and engaging manner.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies and activities, and make adjustments where necessary to maximize impact.

What we expect from you

You thrive in a dynamic environment where you work on a variety of projects with multidisciplinary teams. You are proactive, results-oriented, and comfortable operating at all levels of the organization from senior leadership to colleagues across the business. Collaboration comes naturally to you, and your strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills enable you to connect with highly knowledgeable experts and bring them along in your vision and approach.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications or a related field.
  • At least 10 years of experience as a Communications Advisor, with a strong focus on internal communications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both Dutch and English.
  • Strong editorial and content development skills, with the ability to translate complex information into clear and accessible messages.
  • High level of organizational awareness and extensive experience in stakeholder management.
  • Proactive mindset and the ability to work independently in a dynamic and evolving environment.
  • Proven ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
