Applied Environmental Chemistry

TNO is an internationally recognised specialist in the study of harmful components in the environment. Our well-equipped laboraties enable us to determine the precise composition and amounts of substances (e.g. dioxins, particulates, pesticides, PAHs and asbestos) in the air and in water, soil, blood serum and consumer products. We develop new sampling and analysis methods for studying complex questions about the effects of harmful substances.

Soot particles

In the field of AEC we offer a wide range of innovative analysis methods. We develop methods for substances that are new to the environment, and we optimise existing methods so that we can carry out this research more efficiently.
We carry out damage assessments in special situations, for example: identifying the causes of problems in entire production processes. We mainly carry out non-standard complex analyses in difficult matrices. TNO uses sophisticated analysis techniques and has a number of unique facilities.
We use the following analysis methods and equipment:

  • Particle research: SEM-EDX, FEG-SEM-EDX, image analysis techniques, FTIR microscopy, light microscopy, polarisation microscopy, etc.
  • Organic and inorganic components: GC, GC-MS, GC-MS-ATD, NCI-GC-MS, LC-MS, LC-MS-MS, online SPE, Ion chromatography, Sunset, C-Mat, ASE, SPE, ICP-MS, handheld XRF and a number of detectors including FID, PID, ECD, FLU, and UV/VIS.

AEC portfolio

AEC's wide portfolio includes:

  • Development and assessment of sampling and analysis methods, including passive sampling
  • Development and assessment of measurement strategies
  • Development of standards such as NEN, CEN and ISO
  • Second opinions, damage investigation, mediation and troubleshooting
  • Policy-based asbestos studies
  • Sampling, monitoring and analysis of (environmentally relevant) substances in materials/matrices such as biota, serum, urine, food, air, water, soil and consumer products
  • SEM/EDX particle analysis, such as: composition, concentrations, particle size distribution and morphology, including asbestos and mineral fibres
  • Characterisation of (ultra)fine particles, including EC/OC, levoglucosan, hopanes, stearins and nitro-, oxy-PAHs
  • Bio-monitoring, including bisphenol-A, nonylphenol, octylphenol, triclosan, ethoxylates and musk compounds

Research and development accreditation

The Accreditation Council (RvA) has awarded the AEC laboratory all the accreditations required for the analyses it performs. We hold a Research and Development accreditation.
