We focus on five social themes.
TNO cooperates with companies, the public sector and other organisations, to apply our knowledge and expertise with and for others.
We develop knowledge not for its own sake, but for practical application.
TNO offers you the chance to do groundbreaking work and help customers and society with innovative, practical and smart solutions.
On our TNOTIME platform you can find blogs, interviews and background stories. Discover the field of TNO captured in photographs, animations, video and text. Share interesting articles and powerful infographics, or download whitepapers.
The Data Science department at TNO brings together expertise in structured and unstructured data, data infrastructure and data governance, with a particular emphasis on data analytics and semantic technologies. In a world of connected people and devices, data, both complex data and Big Data, is becoming of ever greater importance. Our core mission is to make sense of this data, to help companies and authorities to manage their data and to enable them to make better decisions from both a societal and a business perspective.
The significance of data in our society and in the economy is increasing. People and devices around us generate more and more data. The growth in the number of smartphones, smart meters and fitness gadgets and now the Internet of Things is going to provide even more sources of data. The existing big challenges grow in importance: what data to share, how to share data and how to make sense of data. As a consequence of the growth of different data sources the need for data standards, data analytics, data infrastructures and better data governance has risen. More data means also that data security, personal privacy and cybersecurity become immensely important for society, having implications for policy and regulation as well.
TNO offers two knowledge fields; ‘Data Analytics’ and ‘Connected Business’ which cover the different aspects of data, both having the use and application of the data as their core concern.
Knowledge field ‘Data Analytics’ focuses on the analysis of unstructured or semi structured data. Topics that we work on in this knowledge field include text mining, behavioural informatics, privacy preserving analytics, graph analysis and machine learning. TNO develops and applies techniques for processing unstructured or semi structured data. The team ‘Data Analytics’ converts data into information and focuses on the analysis and visualisation of large amounts of complex data, often coming from different sources, in different formats. The techniques are applied to give companies insights into the large amounts of data which they possess and to give authorities insights into what is happening in a more and more digital world. TNO works, amongst others, on the following topics:
The main application domains that TNO are currently working in are security (illegal activities on the (Dark)web and law enforcement), media, smart cities and industries, sports and health.
Knowledge field ‘Connected Business’ focuses on sharing data in a structured and meaningful manner both within and between organisations and devices. Topics that we cover in this knowledge field are interoperability, semantic technologies, data infrastructures and data governance. We create solutions for electronically sharing information in an efficient and controlled manner. These solutions enable meaningful information exchange within industrial and commercial sectors and across domains. TNO is thus helping and enabling companies, authorities and people to establish new ways of collaborating in a dynamic world. TNO specialises in the following topics:
The main application domains that Connected Business is currently working in are logistics, supply chains, agrifood, smart cities, smart industry, government, IoT, and business services.
