Cost-efficient Yard Automation Solutions (CEYAS)

The global economic growth and expansion of e-commerce have elevated the importance of yards and distribution centres in logistics. However, the continuity of these hubs is threatened by the increasing shortage of drivers. Through initiatives like the CEYAS innovation programme, we aimed to design a cost-efficient system for autonomous vehicle manoeuvres in distribution centres.

Automated trailer movement technology

Automated trailer movement technology presents several benefits for logistics companies and drivers alike. Companies can reduce personnel costs, ensure productivity and continuity, and decrease reliance on qualified drivers. Automation also contributes to lower accident rates, reducing repair and insurance costs. Additionally, drivers benefit from the ability to swiftly switch trailers upon arrival without waiting.

CEYAS

At TNO, our research focuses on developing yard application solutions that prioritise scalability, interoperability, and cost efficiency, especially recognising the low-margin nature of the logistics industry. Through initiatives like the CEYAS innovation programme, we aimed to design a cost-efficient system for autonomous vehicle manoeuvres in distribution centres. We created an efficient vehicle architecture with fit-for-purpose components and modules, integrated with our automation and vehicle control software to optimise efficiency and functionality.

In a feasibility study conducted with leading (automotive) OEMs and suppliers, we integrated our automated driving technology with a modified battery-operated trailer mover called the E-Move, developed by Verhagen in Leiden. To enhance precise manoeuvring, especially during reverse parking, WENOVA.EU provided a crucial sensor technology to determine the angle between the trailer and the E-Move. This collaboration successfully demonstrated the performance and functionality of automated trailer movement in logistics operations.

How do we ensure that self-driving cars are safe? That is the big question researchers have been pondering since 1980. Although aids such as cruise control and automatic braking have made driving easier and safer, the fully self-driving car still seems far away.
