Geo Energy: safe and environmentally friendly attainment of energy below the ground

The demand for natural resources such as oil and gas is growing, which is also the case in the Netherlands. At the same time it is becoming increasingly important to minimise the environmental impact of gas and oil extraction. Therefore TNO not only studies what exactly can be found below the ground in the Netherlands, but also how it can be extracted in a way that is as efficient, safe and environmentally friendly as possible.

Natural gas and oil exploration

We strive towards extracting more gas and oil more efficiently, with less environmental impact and fewer problems for the surroundings. Increasingly, this concerns unconventional sources found in locations that are difficult to access. Our patented revolutionary fibre-optic sensor technology allows us to measure components in the oil and gas flow under the most extreme conditions, such as high temperatures and pressures. We are also attempting to extract more gas from existing fields through such measures as CO2 and N2 injection. This technology has been adopted in a number of pilot projects in the Netherlands and has garnered global interest.

Capturing and storing CO2 emissions

Energy companies required to pay for CO2 emissions in future could benefit from contributing to the development of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). CCS technology is used to capture the harmful carbon dioxide gas which is released when fossil fuels are burned. This gas can be stored underground and put to good use, for example in greenhouses or for CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery (CO2 EOR). This allows us, together, to make a substantial contribution to a better environment, while energy companies can cut costs significantly.

Geothermal energy

Horticulturists and agricultural organisations have high hopes for geothermal energy. The technology allows heat from the subsurface to be used directly for district heating in cities or for heating greenhouses. This can have a major impact on costs since gas no longer needs to be purchased for heating purposes. It is better for the environment because of the limited CO2 emissions.
