Operational military performance in a virtual world

TNO carries out research measuring military performance, the mutual influence of cognitive, physical and mental aspects, and the possible interventions to increase performance of combat soldiers.

Military action is complex, and can be influenced by many factors. Not only the opponents, the local population, or the level of threat influence performance, also heat, cold, physical exertion or the task itself do so. TNO carries out research measuring military performance, the mutual influence of cognitive, physical and mental aspects, and the possible interventions to increase performance of combat soldiers. To this end, a compilation has been developed that uses a unique combination of ' Serious Gaming ', ' Virtual Reality' and a controlled laboratory environment with climate chambers, treadmills and extensive measurement instrumentation. TNO makes it possible to measure and train in a more integrated way by immersing the combat soldiers in a virtual environment, in which they also have to perform physically; and in a whole range of climatological conditions.

Future missions

TNO sees many future opportunities where an increasing amount of elements can be added. E.g. action within a team where communication plays an important role; adding decision support like navigation and smartphones, and longer scenarios in which fatigue starts interfering. Our aim is to improve the measuring and training for future missions.
