Simulation: Live, Virtual and Constructive

"Using satellite data and other data collected yesterday, we practice today for tomorrow's mission" For TNO, that is the essence of simulation research. By integrating Live, Virtual and Constructive simulations in a smart manner, we create added value in training sessions. Being independent of the weather, the location, available materials and human resources is what creates that added value. Moreover, simulation training is safe and cost-efficient for organisations. Simulation makes it possible to perform types of training that would otherwise be impossible.

Experts in simulation research

TNO is a valued knowledge partner and expert in simulation research. Thanks to our unique and long-term cooperation within NATO and the EU, we are frontrunners in this area of expertise. Close cooperation with government bodies, knowledge institutions and industrial partners enables us to translate ideas into products quickly and effectively. This allows us to guarantee a fast innovation cycle.

Anticipating technological developments

Technology develops rapidly in simulation. We anticipate these developments with simulation research and make it possible to rapidly implement innovative ideas for practical issues.

Making society resilient

Simulation is an increasingly important resource for Defence and Security. It concerns critical knowledge and is an indispensable technique for training and development purposes. The complexity of contemporary military training and the scarcity of available resources mean an increase in demand for research on the use of simulation in training. TNO applies its knowledge to solve current and pressing issues of clients. We make society more resilient through simulation research.

Modelling and simulation

Modelling and simulation are well-established tools for analysis, design, acquisition and training in the military domain. Simulation research can, of course, also be used in other training domains, such as the police or fire brigade. TNO distinguishes between three different types of simulations:

  • In Live simulations, real people operate real systems, such as a soldier on a field training mission.
  • In Virtual simulations (virtual reality), a player operates in a simulated environment, such as a pilot in a flight simulator or Max Verstappen in an F1 racing simulator.
  • In Constructive simulations, both humans (artificial intelligence) and the environment are simulated. Consider, for instance, a war game for mission planning or SimCity, a strategy game.

Live, Virtual and Constructive simulations simulate reality in a smart way. People learn, in simulated training, how to act in real situations. TNO uses simulation research to find the optimal mix of simulations. Simulation research delivers knowledge, methods and instruments for Live, Virtual and Constructive integration, for example techniques for interoperability, validation, synthetic environment and behaviour modelling.
