Security system stadium at ADO Den Haag

The construction of a new stadium provides a unique opportunity to redesign the entire security system and to implement a well-designed technical infrastructure fit for the future. To do this a vision is first needed of the wishes and requirements of the various parties and of the changes the future is likely to bring. A challenge that ADO Den Haag and TNO have taken on together.

TNO has been involved in ADO Den Haag's plans for the design and organisation of its new stadium since 2003. The stadium will first be used in the 2007-2008 season. What started with a question about the potential for biometric face recognition developed over the next three years into a joint redesign of the security infrastructure. The challenge was to combine the varying requirements and wishes of the Municiplity of The Hague, the Haaglanden Regional Police Force, the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) and, of course, ADO Den Haag itself. The aim was to make full use of new technological possibilities. And, to anticipate future developments while ensuring that the leading role was reserved for the human surveillant.

Innovative technologie

New technology has been liberally incorporated into the design of the new security system. For example, biometric face recognition is one aspect of the admission control system. Digital high-resolution cameras have also been used. They make it possible to both scan the area and to observe details and save them. In addition, TNO has developed new products with ADO Den Haag and partners. With Egripment, for example, TNO has developed the SpotShot, a movable camera with a powerful zoom lens that photographs everyone in the stands every three minutes. TNO is working with AVEQ to make a product for focused noise surveillance that will make it much easier to trace and localise undesirable behaviour.

Field lab

Watching football in a safe environment is not the only opportunity created by the new stadium. The stadium and its infrastructure offer other parties a unique opportunity to use new concepts and technologies in a realistic environment with many thousands of visitors. For this reason, the stadium will be used explicitly as a field lab for security concepts at major events. The experience and understanding gained in this environment can be translated directly to other environments that handle heavy streams of visitors, such as stations, shopping centres, inner cities and swimming pools.
