Biomass & Energy Efficiency

ECN part of TNO focuses on the thermochemical conversion of sustainably grown biomass into sustainable energy, chemicals and materials. In addition, ECN part of TNO plays a prominent role in the development of sustainable technologies and knowledge in energy efficiency for the energy-intensive industry.

Biomass

Biomass has a prominent role in the transition to sustainability. Biomass should preferably be used where there are no or limited sustainable alternatives available:

  • as a high-quality raw material for the biobased economy (e.g. for the production of chemicals)
  • as fuel for process heat in industry, for aviation and shipping as well as heavy road transport
  • as a back-up or for absorbing peaks in spatial heating and electricity generation

ECN part of TNO, in close cooperation with industry and other knowledge institutions, is responding to this challenge with the development and market introduction of thermochemical conversion technology in combination with catalysis and separation technology for the conversion of biomass.

Energy-efficiency

With a view to recent agreements in the climate treaties and the European Energy Efficiency Directive, which aims to achieve 20% energy savings in Europe by 2020, the target for the Netherlands is a cumulative energy saving in final consumption of 480 PJ in the period 2014-2020.

In order to meet these objectives, innovations in energy efficiency are necessary. ECN part of TNO develops knowledge and technology for energy-efficient innovations in industrial processes.
