Towards a reliable sustainable energy system

The roadmap is working on keeping the energy system reliable and affordable during the energy transition. Integral analysis enables a thorough design of the complex interplay between the generation and use of energy. To meet the increasing demand for flexibility, technology is being developed in the areas of demand response, conversion to energy carriers, energy infrastructure, heat and electricity storage, and energy storage underground.

The fluctuating supply of solar and wind energy is growing rapidly, thereby greatly increasing the need for flexibility in the energy system. Energy demand will also be electrified. The programme 'Towards a reliable sustainable energy system' is working on four innovation lines in order to keep the energy system reliable and affordable:

Techno-economic analysis and design of the energy system

ECN part of TNO provides independent knowledge and realistic strategies for your future energy system. The advice of ECN part of TNO is transparent and based on the in-depth research work we do for the Dutch government, the EU and industry.
Projects concern among others: energy planning, decision support, implementation strategy, innovative integration solutions and scenario assessment.

Robustness and flexibility of the energy system

Future scenarios show that it is unlikely that our current energy system will be able to continue to guarantee reliability. It is only by giving flexibility a prominent role in our energy system that we will be able to make it future-proof.
ECN part of TNO combines domain knowledge of energy with that of large-scale and complex IT systems. ECN part of TNO develops technological and digital innovations in order to be able to respond quickly to fluctuations in the supply and/or demand of electricity, such as various forms of energy storage, continuously adjustable energy generation and systems that match the electricity demand of building owners, housing corporations and/or small business users to the supply.

Energy conversion and storage

High-temperature heat, fuels for heavy transport and raw materials will be dependent on liquid or gaseous fuels for some time to come. These functions can be fulfilled by converting biomass or electricity into fuels, for example via green gas or hydrogen.
Conversion and storage can relieve the burden on the electricity grid in the event of a sharp increase in the amount of renewable electricity, also in the context of large-scale production of electricity by offshore wind farns and solar meadows.
ECN part of TNO develops, demonstrates and implements technology for converting electricity into hydrogen (electrolysis) and various technologies for storing energy (carriers).

Infrastructure energy transport

Making the energy supply more sustainable, saving energy and making different sectors (built environment, industry, etc.) and forms of energy (electricity, gas, heat) more interconnected will place new demands on existing and new energy infrastructure.
ECN part of TNO develops models for the integrated design of electricity, gas and heat infrastructure and for asset management of the existing energy infrastructure. ECN part of TNO is working on a transparent public-private partnership for the integration of sustainable heat sources with open, 4th generation, heat grids.
