Energy Transport Infrastructure

Between energy use and energy sources lies the transport of energy: the energy infrastructure. Making the energy supply more sustainable, saving energy and making different sectors (built environment, industry, etc.) and forms of energy (electricity, gas, heat) more interconnected will place new demands on existing and new energy infrastructure.

It is important in this respect that 'old shoes' are not discarded inadvertently. Optimum use of invested social capital in the existing gas infrastructure and offshore electricity and gas infrastructure will improve the affordability and reliability of the energy system. TNO develops and manages models for the integrated design of new electricity, gas and heat infrastructure and for the asset management of the existing energy infrastructure.

The (partial) replacement of natural gas in the natural gas grid by new energy sources such as biogas and hydrogen requires innovative materials and smarter systems and control algorithms for dynamic control of gas composition and heat flows, monitored with the aid of innovative measures, low costs and sensors. TNO uses its clustered knowledge in the field of materials, sensors, (multiphase) flow, complex ICT systems and big data for the development of an efficient and reliable energy infrastructure. TNO is the leader in integrity and safety evaluations of energy systems.

TNO is working on an open and transparent public-private partnership for the integration of sustainable heat sources with advanced, open, 4th generation, heat grids inside and outside industry.

Towards a reliable, affordable and fair energy system
