Multi-touch provides overall picture in complex situation

In crisis situations it is vital to keep an overview of dynamic and complex organisational and business processes that are often in different geographical locations.

The use of multi-touch technology means that people from various organisations and areas of expertise can together have greater control over the situation and resources in the field. More and more information systems are being linked together, and this growth will continue with future generations of intelligent sensor networks. However, the amount of information that becomes available through these channels during a crisis can be overwhelming and make it difficult for those involved to obtain and manage the overall picture. Control is also important. The application of multi-touch technology results in a central overview and greater situational awareness, and therefore more effective decision-making for all those involved.

Maximum control of complex ICT systems

TNO's knowledge in the field of Human Centred Design – which puts the human user at the heart of innovations – combined with the application of innovative ICT techniques is crucial in terms of indicating how information can be visualised and influenced in a specific context, having been optimally incorporated in the processes of the organizations involved. Examples of applications with which TNO has extensive experience include dike monitoring, crisis management, defence, and the management of energy and telecom networks.

Cooperation Crisismanagement Groningen

TNO has worked with Crisismanagement Groningen to study how multi-touch technology can be used in practice in an operational crisis situation. This was tested in an exercise involving information overload during a flood disaster. The exercise showed that multi-touch technology can be used in several ways by multidisciplinary groups to keep an easy overview and analyse a complex and rapidly changing situation. If you would like to find out about what multi-touch technology can do for your organisation, we would be pleased to hear from you.
