Clear5G: Leading research on 5G for the Factories of the Future

As part of its R&D efforts towards 5G, TNO has co-initiated the new H2020 Clear5G project, the 1st EU/International research project which particularly addresses the technical challenges of future (5G) wireless networks in the Factories of the Future (FoF) environments. Haibin Zhang, Senior Scientist at TNO, is technical manager of Clear5G.

Various use cases in the Factories of the Future (FoF) pose different technical requirements on communications (latency, reliability, massive connectivity, etc.),  which cannot be met by any single known wired or wireless access technology. Technological versatility improves service provisioning capabilities, but meanwhile increases challenges on how to effectively manage convergence among co-existing technologies. The challenges are further increased, if considering peak interference due to the operation of heavy machinery in typical factory environments.

As part of its R&D efforts towards 5G, TNO has co-initiated the new H2020 Clear5G project, the 1st EU/International research project which particularly addresses the technical challenges of future (5G) wireless networks in the FoF environments.

The Clear5G team comprises 12 European and Taiwanese corporations, SMEs, as well as research and academic institutions, coordinated by University of Surrey (the 5G Innovation Center of UK). As technical manager of Clear5G, Senior Scientist Haibin Zhang at TNO is in charge of the overall technical coordination of the project and its technical content.
