Effective human robot cooperation and augmented reality support

Flexible and efficient production is crucial if manufacturing companies in the Netherlands are to remain competitive. New technologies such as robots and augmented reality support employees in working quickly and faultlessly. An effective division of tasks and cooperation between human and robot is crucial in this respect. TNO has knowledge, software tools and demonstrators in the field of robot control, operator and AR on the production shopfloor.

The EU project Horse has developed new knowledge and tools (the Horse Framework) for management and cooperation between people, robots and digital support such as augmented reality on the production floor.

If you are interested in a demonstration, the Horse TNO competence centre in the Fieldlab RoboHouse can show you the following concrete things:

- Physical assembly workstations in which operator, robots and augmented reality (AR) work together to assemble various sample products.

- The Horse Framework, consisting of MPMS and the Horse messagebus for controlling processes at the factory/production line level.

- TNO step scheduler for controlling and assigning actions to different actors such as operators, robots, machines, and work instructions at the workplace level.

TNO AR demonstrator and the Horse Framework are tested at Thomas Regout.

put to the test by tri

The TNO AR demonstrator and the Horse Framework have been tested and evaluated at Thomas Regout International (TRI) in Maastricht. Thomas Regout International develops and produces high-quality telescope guidance and sliding systems. A number of years ago, TRI made a conscious choice to produce here in the Netherlands and is currently in full transition to a flexible factory of the future. Various robot applications have been introduced for interim handling of semi-finished products. Augmented reality (AR), as instructional support, has been tested in the assembly of complex tools for the production machines.

TNO set-up at RoboHouse (Delft): human-robot-AR cooperation in production

Due to the large variety of products, many tool configurations are needed. It now takes months to teach new operators. And inexperienced employees are more likely to misplace parts (especially orientation). In the test, inexperienced employees were instructed step by step by means of AR projected work instructions (text and images) on the worksheet, the product itself and on the trays with parts. The evaluation showed that inexperienced employees were able to put together the blocks without additional explanation, and without errors in the end product. During the test, the inexperienced employees took 1.5 times longer than experienced employees. TRI expects that with this system the learning time will be shortened from months to a matter of weeks.

What TNO can do for your processes

Would you like to know more about what these technologies can do for your process? The following are possible:

- A demonstration of the TNO workplace set-ups and control software within RoboHouse.

- A workshop or work session in RoboHouse with representatives from your company. Together we will explore the possibilities for robotisation and AR operator support on the basis of a sample product and process from your company.

- A feasibility study in the demo setup with a sample product from your company, including an estimate of the costs and benefits.

- Advice on the IT architecture needed to enable implementation within your company.
