The main objective of the SOCRATES (Self-Optimisation and self-ConfiguRATion in wirelEss networks) project is to develop, evaluate and demonstrate methods and algorithms for self-configuration, self-optimisation and self-healing in wireless and mobile networks.
These technologies will make it possible for networks to function autonomously and automatically configure ('plug-and-play'), optimise and heal themselves (e.g. in the event of a base-station failure). This means that future mobile networks can be managed with only minimal human intervention, thereby achieving considerable OPEX reductions. A further aim of the project will be to improve the quality of communication services (Quality of Service).
TNO is coordinating the project, which will run for three years. The other consortium members are two leading suppliers (Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks), a mobile operator (Vodafone), a consultancy company (Atesio) and two research organisations (TU Braunschweig and IBBT).
