CO2 reduction by high-efficiency Flex Fuel technology with extremely low emissions

Do you want to substantially cut fossil fuel consumption in favour, ultimately, of sustainable fuels?

The European Union wants to reduce CO2 emissions by 80-95% by 2050 compared to 1990. For long-distance and heavy road transport and maritime applications, the internal combustion engine will remain the main powertrain application in the coming decades, with gas and liquid as energy carriers, hybrid versions not excluded. In order to achieve this objective for the transport sector, it is crucial to maximise engine efficiency (to 55% or higher) and make the engine suitable for Flex Fuel: using combinations of sustainable fuels. In addition, it remains important to minimise the emission of harmful gases (emission without impact).

In cooperation with OEMs, suppliers and government, TNO is developing the Dual Fuel RCCI (Reactivity Controlled Compressed Ignition) combustion concept. Engines with this RCCI technology perform remarkably better in terms of efficiency and emissions than today’s state-of-the-art diesel engines. With this new knowledge and technology TNO is contributing to making transport more sustainable by enabling the reduction fossil fuel use and boosting the use of the requisite sustainable fuels within the energy transition. TNO offers support in optimising energy consumption and reducing emissions for each type of transport.

Minimum costs

TNO's model-based control chain focuses on minimum development time and costs. The chain combines unique knowledge and concepts in the field of fuel selection, exhaust gas after-treatment, from optimum use of residual heat, (mixed) testing (including climate, traffic) and control-oriented modelling to virtual signal detection and adaptive control algorithms.

For whom is this interesting?

Our technical developments focus on heavy-duty engines for trucks with their long-distance transport, maritime applications and numerous stationary applications such as generators. They are interesting for OEMs of heavy-duty vehicles, fuel and energy suppliers or for marine engine manufacturers and end users of these systems. Our research areas are: real-world energy and emission performance, Flex Fuel fuel control and predictive powertrain control combined with Waste Heat Recovery (WHR).

TNO is currently developing a multi-partner consortium and is open to partners who want to take RCCI technology a step further with us. Benefits include:

  • You get RCCI measurement data, motor hardware adaptation solutions, validated models and RCCI control strategy concepts.

Ultimate goal

Our ultimate goal is to demonstrate RCCI Dual Fuel performance in the real world by 2021 in a vehicle of unprecedented efficiency that meets the requirements of Euro VI and the US EPA23 .
