TNO is working together with large metropolitan areas and car manufacturers to accelerate the rollout of cooperative automated driving (i.e. CACC). Both parties are essential to turn this into a success. Creating interoperability on communication, performance and safety, and performing pilots in realistic environments are a key step towards fewer traffic jams, more driving comfort, less pollution, fuel-saving and improving traffic safety. Cooperative automated driving will, in the near future, have a major impact on urban accessibility and quality of life.

European incentive

At the beginning of 2016 we demonstrated so-called virtual carpooling on the public road. Cars digitally ’hook-up’ and jointly continue their respective journeys. In the commercial vehicle domain the demonstrations at the European Truck Platooning Challenge in April this year testify the huge potential of cooperative automated driving when platoons of two or three trucks from Sweden, Germany and Belgium drove on a number of European motorways cooperatively and automated to the Maasvlakte near Rotterdam. All leading European truck manufacturers took part in this test in real-world conditions, with a number of manufacturers using platooning technology developed by TNO.

Unique opportunity for car manufacturers

Now the time has come for the automotive industry to work together on cooperative automated driving and accelerate from small-scale demonstrations to major pilots on the road in normal traffic in metropolitan regions. It can only be made possible by engaging both metropolitan areas and OEMs in a pre-competitive environment.

Regional pilots and a standard for interoperability

The Netherlands leads the field in research into testing cooperative driving for both trucks and cars. Companies, knowledge institutions and the authorities are working closely together to prepare the landscape for a commercial introduction of CACC. Our country also has many internationally prominent players in the high-tech and traffic industries that have been working on cooperative driving for many years.

Interaction protocol for cooperative automated driving

Large scale cooperative automated driving requires that the cars of different brands (multi-brand) must be able to interact with each other. A standard for communication between the vehicles of different brands and the infrastructure is the first key task for which the cooperation of manufacturers is crucial. Now that their cars are acquiring more and more automatic systems, a technology that makes the cars interoperable with each other is the next step along this line. One of the challenges in addition to the development of an international standard is to ensure that the system between the very different brands perform robustly in every conceivable circumstance. Manufacturers that are part of this development show how they want to lead by example and meet the growing demand from European regions for new mobility concepts. TNO is bringing parties together to develop a standard, an interaction protocol, for cooperative automated driving with cars of all kinds of brand and type.


To enable cooperative automated driving on real-roads we invite car manufacturers and metropolitan areas to join forces to go for interoperability by standardization on safety, communication and performance with the goal to organize medium scale pilots on cooperative automated vehicles in metropolitan areas.
