Singapore & The Netherlands face similar challenges such as an Ageing population, Urbanization & Energy Transition while sharing complementary characteristics such as Land restraints, Mega ports (Air & Sea), strong High-tech industry & renowned Technical Universities. Both countries play a global, leading role in the introduction of autonomous vehicles1. While The Netherlands has achieved a strong position in preparing its infrastructure and legislation for Connected Automated Vehicles, Singapore has accomplished significant results in testing and deploying Autonomous Vehicles on the public road.

At TNO we believe that New Urban Mobility, such as Mobility as a Service, Connected & Automated Vehicles and Zero Emission Transport, has the potential to create the right conditions for safe, accessible & sustainable future cities. A successful introduction of these innovative technologies is therefore key. This can only be achieved by a balanced interaction between humans, vehicles and their environment. By joining forces, both countries benefit from each other’s expertise, creating the ideal ecosystem to accelerate innovations towards proven, advanced technologies.

TNO’s activities in Singapore

In 2015, TNO opened the doors of its Singapore office. Since then, TNO participates, through technology assessment, methodologies and policy advice, in carefully selected applied research programs that enable the acceleration of knowledge development & exchange between public agencies, academic & private partners.

Examples of projects in Singapore:

AV Testing

Together with the Centre of Excellence for Testing & Research of AV's @ NTU (CETRAN) at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), TNO is developing a scenario based safety assessment framework for Autonomous Vehicles deployment on the public road.

Electric Bus Fleet

In close collaboration with the Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA), TNO is developing a zero emission toolbox to simulate optimal deployment of an electric, public bus fleet.

Vehicle Emissions

With support of the Singapore National Environment Agency (NEA), TNO is building a cost effective prototype of a Smart Emission Monitoring system that measures real-world tail pipe emissions of diesel vehicles.

Airport Automation

Working closely with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), TNO is developing airport specific scenario based testcases to enable safe deployment of automated container tractors at Changi Airport.

Urban Planning

Together with the National University of Singapore (NUS), TNO is building an Urban Strategy demonstrator, a data driven digital twin for holistic urban planning & design that enables Cities to strategically plan and manage Urban Mobility in relation to the environmental & spatial impact.
