TNO conducts research into methods for reducing noise and vibration. The resulting recommendations are based on objective model calculations and at-source measurements, and also on the behaviour of the structure. Generating reliable predictions makes it possible to implement effective measures as necessary. The effect of measures can also be calculated at an early stage.

Noise from railways in built environments is high on the list of priorities of rail operators and the government. New railway lines, more and faster rail traffic and the construction of homes close to rail routes are all factors that require effective policy for reducing noise. EU and national legislation now stipulates that noise levels must be assessed and action plans drawn up. This means that quieter rolling stock and rail infrastructure need to be developed through operational and local planning and maintenance practices, taking account of noise emissions.
