Climate Proof Cities

As dynamic systems in which most people live and work, cities are vulnerable to the effects of climate change: flooding, heat and drought. The spatial structure, public spaces, water system and buildings must be adapted if the city is to be kept habitable in the future and safeguarded from ailments and social disruption. So how do we make cities climate proof?

Climate Proof Cities (CPC) is one of the consortia within the national research programme Knowledge for Climate. The aim of CPC is to enhance the adaptive capacity and reduce the vulnerability of the urban system to climate change. Working with various stakeholders, strategies and policy tools are developed for the adaptation of cities and buildings. Research is carried out within the broad context of urban development that is influenced not only by climate change but also by social, environmental and economic developments, and the urban system of governance.

Integral adaptation study

Given this broad context, intensive cooperation among researchers from different backgrounds is essential. The researchers in the consortium thus represent a variety of disciplines: climatologists, engineering scientists, urban developers, administrators and designers. They also come from different research organisations: TNO (consortium leader), KWR, University of Utrecht, TU Delft, TU Eindhoven, Wageningen University, Unesco-IHE, Deltares, University of Amsterdam, Radboud University Nijmegen, Manchester University, Universität Kassel and Universität Freiburg.

Practical cases in cities

In order to boost the applicability of the results in practice, researchers and end users (municipalities, water broads and provincial authorities) cooperate very closely in a number of real-life oriented sub-projects. These cases are in various Dutch urban areas, namely: Rotterdam, Haaglanden, Amsterdam, Arnhem/Nijmegen, Tilburg and Utrecht.

The research programme thus generates integrated and applicable knowledge about the entire chain of urban climate and the impact of climate change on cities up to the management and control needed to implement adaptation measures. CPC sees this knowledge as a tool to enable well founded decisions to be made about the need and timeliness of adaptations in the built environment.
