For the most part, little is known about the impact on the environment and our health of new and existing synthetic chemicals, such as pesticides, brominated flame retardants, phthalates, organotin compounds and perfluor compounds.
In addition, other high-risk chemicals, such as polycyclical aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and dioxins, pose a threat to people and the environment. Once in the environment, many of these pollutants end up in the human body via the food chain. Exposure also takes place through the air, through water and through their presence in our habitat. The Environmental Analysis department develops and validates methods for the analysis of these micro-pollutants in various matrices/materials: biota, diet, water, soil and consumer products.
Environmental monitoring projects are being performed under the European Water Framework Directive and Air Quality Directive. In the field of bio-monitoring, NGOs number among TNO's customers.
