With a background in organic chemistry, my research interests lie in the following topics:
Ambitions are to strengthen the relationships with national and international research institutes, industrial partners and universities, and expand our knowledge to civil CBRN defense. These ambitions are completely covered by the DSS Roadmap “Protection, Munitions & Weapons”.
Most significant recent result comprises an international collaboration with OPCW and the German Bundeswehr, and deals with the unequivocal analysis of authentic biomedical samples taken from a deceased victim after an alleged attack with chemical agents in the Syrian conflict. It is the first open scientific publication describing the analysis of such authentic samples, providing unequivocal evidence for the use of nerve agents in the Syrian conflict.
Another hallmark is my membership of the Scientific Advisory Board (since 2018) of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), as first Dutch citizen. The OPCW is the international chemical weapons ‘watchdog’ and the winner of the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize.
Finally, my chairmanship of NATO-RTG 306 “Translating medical chemical defence research into operational medical capabilities against chemical warfare agent threats” allows me to connect with many fellow scientists with similar interests.
