RESEARCH AREA

Secure, clean, and efficient energy is one of the great societal challenges of our time. Electricity as a sustainable energy carrier plays a central role in the most effective transition scenarios toward sustainability. To harness this potential, the current electricity infrastructure needs to be rigorously re-engineered into an integrated and intelligent electricity system: the smart grid. Key elements of the smart grid vision are the coordination mechanisms. In such a system, vast numbers of devices, currently just passively connected to the grid, will become actively involved in system-wide and local coordination tasks.

The general focus of my research is on the interdisciplinary field in the intersection of Power Systems Engineering, Computer Science and Energy Economics. The engineering challenge is to realize self-managing characteristics of the future intelligent electricity network, and the stakeholder ecosystem around it, adapting to unpredictable changes and events while hiding intrinsic complexity to operators and users.

RECENT RESULTS

I am the main inventor of the PowerMatcher SmartGrid Technology, an ICT-based control system for sustainable electrical power systems. The technology has been proven in a number of field trials, recently in the Energy Front Runners pilot in Heerhugowaard, The Netherlands.

Among current developments is the DiMEC market system: Distribution-level Market-based Energy Coordination, a multiple-timescale automated local market system integrating distribution-level ancillary service delivery with wholesale market trade.
