Internship | Optimizing Automated Visual Inspection for Non-Flat Optical Surfaces

A new system has been introduced to perform automated visual inspections on optical surfaces according to ISO standards. It currently works well for glass and has been tested on flat aluminum surfaces. The next step is to test its performance on non-flat aluminum surfaces and coated surfaces, which are common in optics manufacturing and improve the algorithm. This internship focuses on improving the system’s algorithm so that its results align with the assessments made by experienced operators.

• You will test the automated inspection system on various non-flat aluminum surfaces and evaluate its performance.
• Your task is to analyze discrepancies between the system’s output and operator assessments, and optimize the algorithm to improve compatibility. This may involve adjusting parameters, refining detection logic, and proposing improvements to the inspection workflow.
• You’ll work closely with production and engineering teams to ensure the solution fits within existing processes and meets quality standards.

• You are currently enrolled in an HBO program in a relevant technical field (e.g. optics, mechatronics, applied physics, or software engineering).
• You have basic experience with software and programming.
• You enjoy analytical thinking and problem solving.
• You communicate clearly and can coordinate with different stakeholders.
• You have an interest in process flow optimization and quality control.

For this internship vacancy it is required that the AIVD issues a security clearance (VGB) after conducting a security screening. Take into account that this process may take about 8 weeks. Important to be aware of before applying:

• Before the start of the internship, the internship agreement from TNO needs to be signed. For students at a college or university based in the Netherlands, TNO uses the UNL-template (supplemented with a number of specific agreements from TNO). For students of foreign and MBO educational institutions, the TNO internship agreement applies. TNO does not sign any other internship agreements.
• Before the start of the internship, the educational institution will need to confirm in writing that:
  • 1) you are enrolled at the educational institution during the internship, and;
  • 2) the internship takes place as part of the programme of the study.
• The confirmation of educational institution takes place by signing the UNL template or forms prepared by TNO.
• Interns at TNO must be in possession of a Dutch residential address at the start of the internship. Performance of internship activities from abroad is not possible.
