The subsurface is key to the transition towards a sustainable energy system, acting as both a source and a buffer for thermal energy. Repurposing former natural gas fields and salt caverns for renewable energy storage will be essential in the future. Additionally, underground CO2 storage is critical in mitigating climate change.
